VERSE 1

I gotta get on back

to Fort Worth.

I’m in a hurry, in a hurry.

Cause a sweet thing there is giving birth.

And I’m the daddy, I’m the daddy.

A one way fare is what I’m buyin’,

On a South bound Trailways bus.

And while it’s true that I’d rather be flyin’,

There is no way that I’m making a fuss.

I can deal with the ride,

By Greyhound from Illinois.

'Cause she told me that we’re havin’ a boy.

CHORUS 1

I’m the baby daddy,

Yeah, the baby daddy.

Yes I have been away,

But now I’m comin’ back to stay.

I’m the baby daddy,

Yeah, the baby daddy.

Sure hope my boy will wait for me.

VERSE 2Picture by Rogier van der Weyden from 1431, depicting Mother Mary nursing the baby Jesus.

This feeling must be love,

And nothing less,

Cause I’m so happy, I’m so happy.

With a new born suckling on her breast.

Like Mother Mary, Mother Mary.

I’ll be the man my boy is needin’.

Now I’m back in his mama’s life.

And pretty clear from the signals I’m readin’.

Soon this Texas beauty will be my wife.

It was nine months ago,

In my car we did the deed.

Now he’s more than just a mouth to feed.

CHORUS 2

I’m the baby daddy,

Yeah, the baby daddy.

I don’t care if he’s small,

I’ll be his coach in basketball.

I’m the baby daddy,

Yeah, the baby daddy.

Just put a ring in layaway.

VERSE 3

Your Mama had me sign,

Lot of legal forms.

There were no clashes, and no grumbling.

Then your whole mood changed into a storm.

With lightning flashes, thunder rumbling.

It’s like you cut me and I’m bleeding.

When you said:  “Better hit the road.”

Best save the tears, what’s the use in pleading.

Time to pay for all those wild oats I sowed.

Got no right to complain.

‘Bout getting told "there's the street."

But you know our future could have been sweet.

CHORUS 3

I’m the baby daddy,

Yeah, the baby daddy.

I did all you asked of me.

I’ve said my last apology.

I’m the baby daddy,

Yeah, the baby daddy.

Guess that is all I’ll ever be.

VERSE 4

Went back to see my boy,

And he wasn't there.

They said that he had, a new family.

There was just no way to pay my share.

And I got damn mad, when she told me.

She could of gone with an abortion.

Then that's that, what's done is done.

But know I'm glad that she chose adoption.

At least someone's out there raising my son.

Some will say they could not,

Give away their only child.

Just the thought can get some people so riled.

CHORUS 4

She's the baby's mama,

Yeah, the baby's mama.

And which ever way she chose.

Folks will always look down their nose

She's the baby's mama,

Yeah, the baby's mama.

Fact is that she pays either way.

The End
